Profile
From the heavens, it resembled the delicate unfolding of a rose’s petals. Nestled within these petals lies a tranquil valley in the heart of the Shenduruney forest. Scattered like emerald gems across the river, the lush green patches exude a mesmerizing charm, as if lifted from the pages of a fairy tale. Welcome to Rosemala—a valley brimming with nature’s splendor. Its name is believed to stem from the land’s resemblance to a blooming rose, though some say it was named after Roslin, the wife of a British planter who once established an estate here.
Located about 15 kilometers deep within the forest from Aryankavu, Rosemala remains one of Kerala’s lesser-explored ecotourism destinations. The journey into the valley is an adventure in itself, with steep, winding forest roads leading the way. As you traverse this path, you’ll encounter the serene whispers of mountain streams and the untamed beauty of dense woodlands. The best way to reach Rosemala is by hiring a jeep, and assistance from the forest department can be sought for a smoother experience.
Begin your trek by venturing into Darbhakkulam, a secluded pond hidden within Rosemala. The name ‘Darbha’ comes from Poa cynosuroides, a plant significant in Hindu rituals, hinting at a time when the area was blanketed with these sacred grasses. As you make your way to Darbhakkulam, immerse yourself in the vibrant wilderness teeming with life. Observe rare butterflies, exotic mushrooms, and elusive forest frogs. The tranquil lake mirrors the rolling green hills that cradle it, while darting fish disturb the water’s glassy surface. Listen closely—you may hear the gentle murmurs of hidden streams flowing through the caves in the lake’s eastern region.
For a breathtaking view, make your way to the Rosemala watchtower. Returning to Rosemala Junction, you’ll find a trail leading to this vantage point, which unveils the full expanse of the Thenmala Dam. The cool breeze that dances over the shimmering waters will linger in your memory long after you leave. If the weather favors you, both sunrise and sunset from this spot are unforgettable spectacles.
Another must-visit trekking spot in Rosemala is Pallivasal. A two-kilometer trek through the forest leads you to a pristine lake. Here, a boat ride across its serene waters takes you deep into the heart of the wilderness.
One of the most captivating sights awaits at the confluence of the Umayar, Shenduruniyar, and Uriliyar rivers. As your boat glides across the vast reservoir, encircled by towering hills, you’ll be awed by the lake’s immense depth—reaching up to 115 meters in some places. The still waters you admired from the shore begin to stir, rippling under the growing gusts of wind. Waves rise and fall as you approach the land once more, leaving behind the gentle embrace of the lake that has etched its tranquility into your soul.
