Profile
Umayar is one of three rivulets that originate deep within the Shenduruney Wildlife Sanctuary, the only sanctuary of its kind in Kollam District. It merges with the others at the eastern edge of the Thenmala Reservoir. The area surrounding this confluence is named after the Umayar River, and the Forest Department maintains a camp shed on this tranquil peninsula.
Reaching Umayar requires either a boat ride or a trek through the forest. The journey includes a two-hour 4WD jeep ride from the nearest highway, followed by a 2.5-hour trek along the reservoir’s edge.
Upon reaching Umayar, you’ll be greeted by a stunning view of the reservoir, with terns gracefully soaring overhead. During the summer, the distant calls of elephants can be heard as they descend the mountain slopes around 3 PM.
